UAE leaders recently joined foreign heads of states, prime ministers and other dignitaries to find ways to protect and preserve cultural traditions put at risk by armed combat. Representatives of more than 40 countries affected by heritage loss joined experts in heritage preservation at the conference, which concluded with the creation of a global fund to help protect culture and traditions affected by war. The fund’s goal is to raise $100 million, which will go toward prevention initiatives, stopping illegal trafficking of cultural artifacts, and helping to restore damaged areas. The UAE is a role model in this field and has paved the way towards devising and implementing actionable solutions. The "Safeguarding Endangered Cultural Heritage" conference is an initiative by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, and French President Francois Hollande. It was held under the patronage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) at the Emirates Palace.
I feel that the government of the United Arab Emirates has made a great decision by becoming leaders in this. It has become common that many countries are forgetting their heritage due to war and violence that has begun to erupt throughout the world. Also, many countries have left their roots behind due to increasing technology and the need for more space. This is a great way to promote cultural diversity and stop the spread of a homogenous culture due to globalization.
This is related to what was discussed during class in this unit because the diffusion of popular culture is contagious and many people begin to forget the roots of their culture. Over the past years, internet has caused the spread of ideas become more faster and efficient. This has caused the world to become highly globalized which is leading to the decrease of cultural diversity on the planet.
