Since work began in May, much of the Mayakovsky – a low-key, utilitarian and yet much-loved Soviet era constructivist building along the capital’s main thoroughfare – has been destroyed. The trend, evident across much of the former Soviet Union, shows no sign of slowing, despite a protracted period of economic stagnation. Tajik officials have brushed off criticism of the urban redevelopment programm, saying the buildings targeted for removal are of negligible historical or cultural significance and need replacing.the building that went up in the late 1920s in a town then called Stalinabad served as the House of Peasants, a clubhouse for farmers. It was on October 19, 1948 Tajik statesman Nusratullo Makhsum declared the creation of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic. It was home to Tajikistan’s first cinema, first modern library, first public reading rooms, first theatre and first radio broadcasting centre. It even housed the country’s first driving school and the first home of the popular Soviet-era Pioneer youth movement.
I believe that it is important to preserve the history of one's country. This building holds a lot of importance to the Tajik community so its important that it is not destroyed. Although, the building symbolizes the Soviet power that once ruled over Tajikistan, it is important to look at the history that it holds after the country gained independence.
This is related to the culture of Tajikistan because it shows the influences that the Soviet Union left on the society of Tajikistan. This also illustrates the evolution of Tajikistan and its people. It symbolizes the strong struggle of people of Tajikistan in order to gain their independence. All in all, the influence of the Soviet Union was a big part of the Tajikistani history and it is important the people of the country respects this and preserves the monuments left behind by this influence.
